The Battlefield of Thermopylae is a site of great historical significance, located in central Greece. It is where the famous Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BC, in which a small force of Greek soldiers held off a much larger Persian army for three days. The battlefield is now a popular tourist destination and offers a chance to explore the ruins of the ancient battle and learn about the heroic efforts of the Greek soldiers.
Serene, spiritual, magical, mystical, extraordinary, breathtaking, immense, inspiring, impressive. These are only some of the words people very often use in an effort to describe the Meteora phenomenon, an awe-insipring site that words cannot actually fully describe. Immerse yourself in nature’s grandeur, history, and architecture, and connect with your spiritual side. The vertical cliffs of Meteora, rising up to 400m above Kalambaka, offer absolute isolation, inner peace, and harmony. The historical monasteries located at the top of the cliffs, are a true wonder of the world and a testament to human determination and devotion. Only 6 of the initial 24 monasteries have survived, dating back to the 14th to 16th century. These monasteries were built by monks who previously lived in individual caves and were united in their vision to create a spiritual haven. It took years to carry the construction material to the top of rocks, using ropes, folding ladders, nets and baskets. You can visit the monasteries even if your interests are not deeply religious, since they are still an awe-inspiring sight.
Saint Varlaam Monastery is one of the six remaining monasteries built on the towering rocks of Meteora, Greece. It is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that is part of the Meteora and is situated at the top of a rocky precipice that is 373 metres above the valley floor.
Roussanou Monastery was built on a vertical pillar that is sixty metres high, and 484 metres above sea level. The entire surface (500 m2) of the top of the pillar is covered by the monastery buildings, which are built in such a manner that the various natural and man-made elements blend into one harmonious whole.
Kastraki (meaning ‘small castle’) is a small, peaceful village that from afar looks like an eagle’s nest at the bottom of the gigantic rocks of Meteora. There, you can enjoy an unforgettable lunch at a picturesque place.
